Climate Education at Jack and Gill

A Childhood Connected to Nature

At Jack and Gill Childcare and Forest School, climate education is not taught as a separate subject — it is part of everyday life.

We believe children develop a deep understanding of the world not through worksheets or abstract ideas, but through real experiences, meaningful connections and time spent in nature.

From the very earliest years, children begin to build a relationship with the natural world — one that supports their wellbeing, curiosity and sense of responsibility.

What Climate Education Looks Like

Each day, children are immersed in an environment where they can explore, discover and learn naturally.

They might be:

  • exploring woodland and open spaces
  • caring for animals and learning gentle handling
  • planting, growing and observing change
  • discovering insects, worms and habitats
  • playing with water, mud and natural materials
  • noticing seasons, weather and changes in the environment

These experiences are not separate activities — they are the foundation of our curriculum.

What Children Are Learning

Through hands-on experiences, children begin to understand:

  • how to care for living things
  • the importance of respect and responsibility
  • how the natural world grows and changes
  • where food and resources come from
  • that their actions have an impact

Learning develops gradually — beginning with sensory exploration in babies and toddlers, and growing into understanding, confidence and care as children get older.

Why It Matters

Time spent in nature has a powerful impact on young children.

It supports:

  • emotional well being and regulation
  • confidence and independence
  • physical development
  • curiosity and problem-solving
  • a lifelong connection to the natural world

We believe these early experiences lay the foundations for children to grow into thoughtful, capable and environmentally aware individuals.

Our Approach

Our approach is:

  • child-led and experience-based
  • rooted in nature and outdoor learning
  • supported by skilled, attentive practitioners
  • responsive to children’s interests and curiosity

Children are given the time, space and freedom to explore — with adults alongside them to guide, support and extend their learning.

Working in Partnership with Families

We work closely with families to support children’s connection with nature beyond the setting.

You can support your child by:

  • spending time outdoors together
  • noticing changes in seasons and wildlife
  • encouraging curiosity and questions
  • allowing children to explore freely (and get messy!)

Our Promise

We are committed to giving children a childhood connected to nature —
where they can explore, discover and grow.
